Honey Island

Honey Island: A Broadcaster's Search for His Mississippi Roots
by Julius K. Hunter

A veteran of more than thirty years of print and broadcast journalistic excellence, Julius Hunter decided to dig for his family's roots in The Mississippi Delta. Using reference and research materials that are now an integral part of the African American Research Collection that bears Hunter's. With a lot of help from the St. Louis County Library's accomplished technicians, Hunter was able to trace by his great-great grandfather, a remarkable and heroic giant who was born a slave in 1825, but by the conclusion of his life had fled the 540 acres of Mississippi farmlad he acquired through some creative entrepreneurship. This is a book that not only tell, how Old New Round climbed out of bonds of slavery to help found the all-Black, self-contained, close-knit community of Honey Island. As poignant book traces what was going on in my great-great granddaddy's household from 1835 to the late 1930, the reader is also give a graphic picture of what was going on outside Honey Island and all around the deep South. And often, it was not a pretty painting.

You'll find plain and suffering; strain and stresses after Emancipation; joy and good humor; devastating man-made and natural disaster that forced a once-prominent Black family to flat out flee Mississippi. Hunter as always maintained that it is the blood that flows through his veins from Old Ned's veins that propelled Hunter into being one of the most trusted broadcast and print journalists -- and more -- in the nation. A must read!
