The former KMOV (Channel 4) anchorman, now vice president for community relations at Saint Louis University, is also a St. Louis police commissioner. But threaded through his formal pursuits is a less obvious passion: helping people find their roots. Mr. Hunter. Mr. President, welcome to St. Louis.

The President. Thank you. It's good to be here.

Mr. Hunter. And thank you for allowing us this opportunity to talk.

Tell me about your time out at the boys' club. I understand you had a great time. The President. Well, yes, I did. And it was a most inspiring thing...

Since the age of 9, Hunter has shown a keen interest and talent in music. At the age of 16 he became organist and choirmaster of a little Lutheran church. In college, he led his fraternity to three consecutive Inter-Frat Sing competitions. (He later wrote the words and music for the official Alma Mater Anthem for Harris-Stowe State University that is still sung today.) Hunter has conducted the St. Louis Symphony Pops Orchestra, The St. Louis Philharmonic, The Holiday Brass, the St. Louis African Chorus, The Clayton Symphony Orchestra, and the In Unison Chorus.

Hunter’s second favorite avocation is writing. He is the author of eight published works:

    • a children’s alphabet book
    • a college textbook on broadcast news
    • a manual on how to research family ancestry
    • a history in words and photos of the mansions of Kingsbury Place
    • a history of builders and mansions of historic Westmoreland and Portland Places
(the U. of Missouri Press’ all-time bestseller)
    • a word-a-day calendar of little known facts about St. Louis history
    • a history of his family history going back to his great-great grandfather who was born   a slave in 1825 Kentucky
    • the newly-released memoir, “TV One-on-One,” a rollicking chronicle of Hunter’s side   chats with nearly 100 celebrities and newsmakers over his 33-year news career
    • Hunter was also a Post-Dispatch columnist in the mid- ‘80’s writing a weekly column   on little know facts about St. Louis history called “Past Times.”

On radio, Hunter was the Sunday night host of a three-hour block of At Your Service on KMOX Radio in the mid to late ‘80’s.

And for ten years he was the permanent radio host for KFUO’s
“Young Heroes in Music” program which featured the musical talents of African American high school students with exceptional skills.

Hunter’s work with young people was also exemplified in his work for more than ten years as the host of “Do the Right Thing” program featured on KMOV, Channel 4.
